Already an approved KBH author? Your existing library membership remains in place—there's no $40 fee to join again. When the planned app is ready, Founding Authors will be offered optional access to its core features for a special $20 one-time fee.

We want the Author Community to be welcoming, supportive, and centered around high-quality children's books. That's why every new member starts with a finished book submitted for consideration.

What Kinds of Books Do We Welcome?
We consider independently published picture books and chapter books intended for children through age 14. We look at the complete reading experience—not just the cover or sales history.
We're not looking for one type of story or a bestseller. We're looking for books we'd feel good about introducing to children and the adults who love them.
A Community That's Still Growing.
We're planning a dedicated KBH Author App to bring community tools, resources, and participation opportunities into one convenient place.
New authors who join through the $40 membership will receive complimentary access to the app's planned core member experience when it launches. Our Founding Authors will have an optional $20 one-time access offer.
The app is not yet available. Its features and launch date are still being planned. You can enjoy currently available membership benefits without waiting for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I pay $40 when I submit my book?
No. Applying is free. If your book is approved, we'll send you an invitation with payment instructions. The one-time $40 fee is due only if you choose to activate your membership.
Can I join the Author Community without an approved book?
Not through the current membership process. Right now, at least one finished children's book must be approved for the KBH Library before an author can join. We may explore additional learning opportunities for aspiring authors in the future.
Is the $40 fee per author or per book?
It's a one-time fee per author, not per book. Members can submit additional finished books for consideration; each additional title is reviewed separately and is not automatically accepted.
Do I have to send a physical book?
Yes. First-time authors need to send one complimentary physical copy of each title submitted for review, either by mailing a copy or ordering one to be delivered directly to KBH. Review copies are not returned, even if a book isn't approved. The cost of the review copy and shipping is separate from the membership fee.
What if my book isn't approved?
You will not owe a membership fee. A declined book does not activate membership or receive a library listing. Due to submission volume, we may not be able to provide individualized feedback or notify every declined applicant.
Does joining guarantee promotion or book sales?
No. Membership gives you access to the community and its available resources, plus a listing for approved books. Reviews, advertising, giveaways, gift guide placement, and other promotional activities are separate opportunities, each with its own guidelines.
I'm already part of KBH. Do I need to pay?
No. Existing approved authors remain part of the founding community without paying the new $40 fee. When the future Author App launches, Founding Authors will be able to choose whether to purchase core app access for $20.
